In a report, Javan newspaper wrote: The blindness of 9 patients who went to Tehran’s Negah Hospital for cataract treatment was a shocking incident, the dimensions of which are currently being investigated under the supervision of Judge Saeed Ahmadbeigi, the head of the capital’s Medical Crimes Prosecutor’s Office. Our conversation with three of the victims of this case sheds light on the shocking aspects of the treatment staff’s treatment of the victims and the dark life they faced.
Traveling a thousand kilometers to become blind
Gholamali Sadoughi is one of the patients who came to Negh Hospital for cataract surgery on his left eye and after the surgery, he lost the vision in his left eye completely. Gholam Ali is 59 years old and is a native of Jangal city of Torbat Heydarieh city in Razavi Khorasan province. He travels more than a thousand kilometers from their city to Tehran by bus, hoping to have his eye operated in one of the most famous and well-equipped specialized ophthalmology hospitals in Tehran, but he did not imagine that the negligence of the medical staff and hospital officials would take his eyes from him forever. He talks about the hardships, sufferings, problems and economic problems that plagued him during this time and made his life bitter and dark.
My life turned black
Gholamali Sadouqi said: “I used to farm in our city, of course for others, because I don’t have capital myself. I usually work as a sharecropper on other people’s farmland. I have three daughters and four sons, one of my daughters is married and lives in Tehran with her husband, and the rest are single. I had a cataract in my left eye, and on the first of October this year, when my farming work was reduced, my daughter called me from Tehran and told me to go to Tehran for surgery. I didn’t accept because of financial problems, but my daughter insisted that Negha hospital is one of the best hospitals for eye diseases and it is better to provide money and have my eye operated in that hospital. “My daughter was worried and wanted an experienced doctor to operate on me so that I would not have any problems in my old age.”
Useless health insurance
He continued: “Anyway, I borrowed some money and came to Tehran. On the 17th of October, I went to the hospital with my daughter, I was examined, and in the afternoon of the same day, I went to the operating room for my left eye operation. Before the operation, I presented my health insurance to the hospital, but they did not accept it and said that this insurance has no value in this hospital, because they do not have a contract with it. I wanted to be operated carelessly, but my daughter insisted, and with a thousand difficulties, I prepared 15 million tomans and deposited it into the hospital account and underwent the operation. But I wish I had never set foot in this hospital. At around 5:00 PM, after eating a bowl of soup, the hospital staff sent us home, and the doctor and the treatment staff assured me that my operation was successful and that I will soon be able to return to my city and get to my farming work.”
The pain that made me impatient
Gholam Ali, who was numbed by pain for a few moments, remained silent for a few minutes and then said: “When I returned home from the hospital, my eye began to water heavily, and we immediately called the hospital, who announced that it was normal and not to worry.” But an hour later, a severe eye pain came over me, so that I became impatient and restless, just like now, the eye pain came back to me and I had to take sedatives. I lost my patience and looked for the hospital again, but there was no doctor and I had to go to his office. “When my doctor examined me, he told me to go to his professor as soon as possible so that he can diagnose the cause.”
There were 9 of us
He continued: “When I went to my doctor, he said that my eye is infected and I need to be operated on immediately. They asked me again to deposit 3 million and 500 thousand tomans and then I went to the operating room and after the operation this time I was admitted to the hospital and the patients who had eye surgery in the hospital that day were added one by one to the hospitalization section and we were 9 people. we became We were hospitalized for a few nights until they introduced me and several others to Labafinejad Hospital for further treatment. The treatment staff of Labafinejad Hospital treated us very well and the medical team tried to treat us, but there was no news from the hospital officials and they did not follow up on our physical condition at all. After this nausea was added to our eye pains, and I even went to a neurologist and paid a lot of money for photos etc., but there was no result and I lost my sight.”
I lost 11 kilos
Sadouqi continued: “Myself and my family were captured and lost in Tehran, and we returned to our city by force and with the loss of my eyesight. During this time, the pain in my eyes cut my safety, so that I lost my sleep and peace. My son, who was a student, dropped out of university and came to help me work and helps me in farming. He takes me to a hospital in Mashhad for an examination once a day, but they can’t do anything either. My life is paralyzed and because of my pain and suffering, I have lost 11 kilos and I am no longer able to work, but the hospital authorities do not hear from us. “My eyesight is not important to me, and now, in addition to the economic problems I am facing, the pain in my eyes has made me helpless and I can’t bear it anymore.”
I was blinded very simply
Mohammadreza Hosni is another patient whose right eye was lost due to the hospital’s negligence. After this operation, Mr. Hosni faced a serious vision problem, because according to him, his left eye was also weak and life became difficult for him after his right eye became blind.
Explaining the story, he said: “I am 66 years old and retired from the government office. Very simply, my right eye developed a cataract, and very simply, due to the negligence of the hospital, I became blind. A few days before the operation, I went to the clinic that belongs to us and our relatives, and my doctor said that it is better for me to see surgery for the cataract problem in the hospital as soon as possible. Since that hospital was very famous, I accepted and went to the operating room on the 17th of Mehr and my doctor operated on my eyes. On the same day, other than me, eight other people also underwent cataract surgery and we all became blind. On the day of the operation, they anesthetized me and when I regained consciousness, they sent me home with a few drops.”
Pain and discharge
He continued: “An hour after I got home, my eyes started to water and the pain gradually came to me, so I had to go to my doctor’s office and he introduced me to a clinic to measure the eye pressure, but my tears wouldn’t stop and my pain didn’t stop either.” It would be more. This time I talked to my doctor on the phone and asked him for help, who asked me to go to the hospital in the morning. When I went to the hospital, he immediately took me to the operating room and operated again. I thought the procedure would ease my pain, but I didn’t think I was going to lose my sight forever. I was hospitalized for a few days and I just realized that all the people who had cataract surgery that day were suffering from my pain.”
empty promise
He said: “I was in the hospital for several days when the treatment staff promised us that we would soon regain our sight and we were happy, but we did not know that they knew the results of their work and gave us empty promises. I was tired of the hospital, because they didn’t do anything special and they really didn’t do anything for us, so I was discharged and went home. My doctor told me to wait until 27 Mehr for my vision to return, but every day that passed, my eye condition was worse than the day before. “I used to go to the clinic one day a week, hoping that my eyes would get better, but I didn’t get any results, and in the end, I and three other patients decided to sue the hospital and its medical staff by hiring a lawyer.”
clean water
He continued: “After this promise, the promises of the treatment staff and the hospital officials continued and they wanted to dissuade us from complaining and pursuing our pain in this way. Some time ago, I saw my doctor and asked him to tell me and the other patients the truth, and he poured clean water on my hand and said that there is no hope for my right eye sight and that my eyesight will never return. I just found out that they put me and eight other patients to work during this time. That day, from the words of my attending physician, I found out that the infection entered our eye through the surgical device, one of whose parts was not replaced properly, and caused our blindness.
If you are blind, we will pay
Hosni continued to complain about the behavior of the hospital officials: “When the hospital officials found out that we had filed a complaint, instead of comforting us and visiting us, they threatened us through people who introduced themselves as the hospital’s lawyers.” For example, one of the staff of the medical staff said, “There is nothing wrong with them. They became blind. We will also pay the ransom.” I told my lawyer to tell the same medical staff that I am ready to blind one of his eyes and give him two eyes in return. Unfortunately, during this time, neither the treatment staff nor the hospital officials asked about any of us and they don’t know what problems and hardships we 9 people are dealing with. They did not send us a single box of sweets during the days that passed and coincided with the birth of Imams and did not comfort us.”
Request from the judiciary
In the end, he said: “I used to take care of my disabled wife, but now someone has to take care of me.” I am facing a lot of problems in my life, because my right eye became blind forever and my left eye also lost its sight, so now one of my children has resigned from his job and is taking care of me and his mother. Some time ago, I found out that the hospital authorities even wanted to bribe our lawyer, but he did not accept. I will stand up for my complaint until the end and I want the judiciary to take the rights of us nine people who have lost our sight so that our rights are not violated.”
My eyes burned
Islam Damavandi is an 80-year-old man from Neishabur who lives in Tehran with his family. He is a retired employee and has seven children.
He said about the blindness of his right eye: “A few years ago, my left eye developed a cataract, and I underwent an operation in Neishabur, and thank God, the operation was successful, and I have no problems with this eye until now.” Some time ago, my right eye developed a cataract, and I went to the hospital for treatment, and on the 17th of Mehr, I paid 17 million tomans and was operated on in the same hospital. An hour after the operation, when I returned home, my eye suddenly started burning. When we called the hospital, they said there was no problem and it was normal. My eyes burned that night until the morning, and when I went to the hospital, they did not let me in and said that my doctor was not treating me and that I should go to his office. Despite all the problems, I saw the doctor in his office, and after the examination, he asked me to immediately go to Labafinejad Hospital and be admitted there.”
I did not accept to evacuate
He continued: “I went to Labafinejad Hospital and there they diagnosed that my eye has a severe infection and I need to be operated again as soon as possible.” I operated for the second time and was hospitalized for a few days, but I did not get better and my doctor said that my eye should be drained, but my son did not agree, and I was discharged from the hospital without getting any results, and I realized that I had lost my vision forever. During this time, I spent a lot of money for my treatment, but I did not get any results and now I am being treated in another hospital and I go there every few days for tests and treatment. I lost my right eye and I am housebound, because if I go out, wind or even a breeze hits my eye, it hurts, so I have to stay at home all the time. I have been suffering from depression for some time now, and there is no news from the officials and the medical staff of the hospital, and they do not care at all what they have put us through. Now I am pursuing my complaint and I hope to get my rights.”
